Photosynthesis: Seeing the Light

Just as photography is a chemical reaction to light, so too is growth in nature. This series chronicles my growth as an individual as I struggle to adjust and prepare for radical changes in my life. While undergoing a major personal transformation, I explore the emotions behind the changes as I create the images themselves, by combining and shifting different elements of both the photos and myself. I am thus evolving right along with the images in my own personal portrayal of photo synthesis.

Trapped: A Metaphysical Representation

The concept of being trapped is a universal fear and a reality for many. Whether it is physical or mental entrapment, the possibilities are endless, and many people are left feeling stuck, smothered, or held-back by different elements of life ranging from abstract ideas to material things, or people themselves. This body of work is a visual depiction of some of the shackles that we may or may not see in our lives, and the attempt to find a way to break free. One way is expression through the creation of these photographs themselves.

This is a collection of work based on famous paintings or photographs. Using myself, or people or things close to me, I recreate an iconic image with my own twist. These images are so familiar to people that I think the true beauty or meaning is sometimes forgotten or glossed over. I wanted to explore both how the images made me feel, and how that feeling would change if the image itself were altered. Once I started doing self-portraits, the photographs became a form of expression and a reflection of my life up to this point. Thus, through trying to recreate other artist's work, I not only got to feel connected with the original creator and what his or her emotions may have been, but also got to address and express my own pent up aggressions about my past, present, and future.
